16 February 1874 — Madrid
Monday. 16th February [1874]. The Post came in today late but no messenger. I did not get up till lunch time. Bernadine came to let Hill arrange a dress for her before I was up. At a little past 3 I went out & called on the Duchess of Fernan Nuñez & made excuses for her having been let in yesterday while I was in bed. I then went on to Salamanca’s house & picked up Mme Saavedra to drive with me. At their door I met D. Juan Riaño & he told me that the child was getting well over the measles. It was rather muddy in the Prado but there were a good many masks & some spoke to us tho’ we did not make them out. At 5 Mme S. got out of my carriage into their own & I came home. Very few people came in the eveng. I had a telegram from Ivor to say he had a second son born yesterday.
