17 February 1874 — Madrid
Tuesday. 17th [February 1874]. Got up abt 11. Brehm came to see me. Wrote letters &c. Esq: came but gave me no lesson as I had not worked. The Messenger turned up having been detained 24 hours at Santander. At 3 I went to fetch Emilia & we drove in the Prado– It was windy & the mud was dried up—but the rain threatened 2 or 3 times. It was “muy animado” & there were a good many masks. Emilia’s boy Juanito went with us dressed up. When I got home abt 5½ I found the Dss de la Torre had been here & had tea with Henry—the papers tell us that Ivor was beaten for Glamorgan. Went to bed early & tired.
