18 February 1874 — Madrid | |
Wednesday. 18th [February 1874]. Ash Wednesday. Got up to breakfast. Juanito Riaño came to show Hill his dress. I painted. Just before lunch Col Fitch called. I took Henry to the Canitz & left him there. Met Aurelie at her door just going out & better. I went to fetch Emilia to take her to drive in the Prado & meeting Carrie Hamilton at the door I took her with me. There were a good many masks & one gave us what appeared to be bonbons & were really socks red & white. We met Henry & he got into the carriage. Afterwards we met Juanito Riaño in his costume & delighted at having a false nose & moustache so we took him with us. We came home early as it was windy & cold. Had a long call from Vernouillet. After dinner we went for an hour to Serranos there, there were very few people there. | |
