7 March 1874 — Madrid
Saturday. 7th [March 1874]. Got up late. Painted & had lesson. The workman from Toledo armory Alvarez called & Henry showed him all Postelazzo’s work & sent him to see the armory here. I drove in the afternoon & went to get Emilia to go with me. We drove up to the Atocha & I thought I should like to see this celebrated church. It is hideous inside with a little black virgin wh has on the order of Maria Louisa! The church is hung round with banners taken in batch &c. Henry rode. Maffei sent us a box for the opera & begged me to invite Aurelie– This we did & heard Polinto. Tamberlick & Mme Sasse sang & it was good on the whole. The music was pretty & the opera over early.
