25 March 1874 — Madrid
Wednesday. 25th [March 1874]. Painted in the morning– At 3½ we started to go to join Mariquilla & Albareda in a croquet party at Vista Alegre Salamanca’s place at Caravanchel. We found that Albareda & 2 friends had already arrived & as the rest had not come we set to work to fish in the canal & after some time we caught a few gold fish & small Tench. Abt 5 the Salamanca party arrived & there were Mr & Mrs Saavedra, Miss Salamanca, Isabel Madrazo, Miss San Louis & Miss Mendez, we then went & set up the croquet hoops & Albareda insisted upon putting them so far apart & the ground was so uneven that we were only able to play ½ a game & then let others play. We played till 6 when it got damp & cold & then we had ices, American salad & wine served to us & Henry & I went home at once.
