28 March 1874 — Madrid
Saturday. 28th [March 1874]. Alarming reports from the North. The Govt give no news & all kinds of things are said. I went to see the MacDonells & the carriage fetched me there & I went to see Mme la Romana & got her to write in some business for Henry abt getting an Englishman out of the hands of the carlists. I went to see the Dss who had no news & then I went & fetched Missie & we went & walked in the Retiro where Henry joined us. We came home & had tea & I played games with Missie. Maffei called. We went to dine with the Koudriaffskys & then the carriage took Missie & her nurse home. Vejarano, Silvela, Maffei &c dined. In the evening the Ayltons, Canitz & MacDonells came here but it was a most dull eveng & we were obliged to play games of guessing to while away the time till the whist was over. Our Messenger Major Hall arrived this morning.
