2 April 1874 — Cordova | |
Thursday. 2nd April [1874]. Breakfast at 9 & went out to the Cathedral. There was a service going on & it was very picturesque to see the Monument they had erected with the hundreds of candles burning round it. It made a flood of gold light in a corner of the old mosque with its many pillars & moorish arches—& the groups of women in black seated on the floor were all in character. Went back to the hotel & refreshed ourselves with lemonade, lunched & went to the station. Duncan Shaw called & said being Holy Thursday no carriages were allowed & so he cd not offer us his. We went therefore in the omnibus– The line beyond Bobadilla, where we dined, was very picturesque & we went throu mountains & rocks thro’ long tunnels but had lovely passes between them. At Alcon we left the mountains & found a lovely little town with English looking villas & then went thro’ a lovely valley full of orange trees in full blossom for 4 stations till we got to Malaga abt 8 o’cl & it was then dark. We were not allowed to enter the town in the carriage & had to get out & walk from the bridge to the Alameda hotel. There I met Nety Montagu on the stairs– The consul Mr Wilkinson met us at the station. Had tea. Went to bed early. | |
