3 April 1874 — Málaga
Friday. 3rd April [1874]. Good Friday. Nety & I went to church at the Consulate. Mr Scott is the chaplain & they have a very nice room & a good congregation & when I came back from church went for a little walk with Henry & came back & lunched with the Montagu’s at 2. After lunch Nety & I set off for a walk together & had just got to the Mole when Henry caught us up & so we went with him to the end of it & then came home. It was rather windy. Abt 7 we began to look out for the great procession of the day & we sat in our balconies with the Montagu’s to look for it. It was nearer 8 when it appeared at the far end of the Alameda. It was then dark & the route of the procession was marked by the hundreds of lighted tapers that were carried—& as it advanced Bengal lights were sent off from different houses. The procession which consisted by a double file of people carrying tapers conveyed a “Virgin de los Dolores” life size through the town. They left the Alameda & came up the street of wh our hotel was the corner house– The Virgin had just passed into the street when there was a sudden panic & the Mayor & Corporation extinguished their lights & took flight accompanied by the crowd. It was found that there was nothing beyond a picpocket & the Govt at once began running backwards & forwards trying to get people back in their places & to light their tapers—& after a while they got back & we left the windows & went to dinner. We found in the Courtyard of the hotel a woman who had fits from fright caused by the Carrera– At dinner we met Mr Lake an ADC of Sir Fenwick’s & several officers who had come in the Escort also a Mme Isidor a singer who has been singing at Gib. In the eveng I sat with Nety talking till bed time.
