13 April 1874 — Gibraltar
Monday. 13th April [1874]. I copied music in the morning & abt 12 we went to the races to see the Convent plate run for. We went to luncheon in one of the mess tents—we returned about 4 & then I went out into the garden to sketch & had tea. Afterwards took a walk up & down the rampart with Henry to see the sunset. There was a great dinner party at the Convent in our honour & a large reception afterwards. There was some feeble singing on the part of 3 or 4 devoted ladies to wh no one listened. I made acquaintance with a curious old Mme Manbusson a sister of Sir J. D. Hay’s. She is quite a character & says most extraordinary things. She has a nice little daughter whom she seems to bully wonderfully.
