14 April 1874 — Gibraltar
Tuesday. 14th April [1874]. We went out directly after breakfast to see a big gun fired as they wanted to try how the shields which had been built over them to protect the gunners wd stand it. The sun was hot & the noise great so I was glad to go home– Played & sang & talked to Mrs de Winton till lunch. We returned the grey parrot who was dumb & the man brought a green one on approval. After lunch Henry & I went to call on the Leslies & saw all her drawings & then went for a drive with Mrs de Winton to see the Govr’s cottage & then to the Mount where we had tea & went over the garden with Capt Macrae. The flowers are wonderful– Hedges of geranium & trees of heliotrope & the buildings are covered with the Bourgainvillier with its mass of crimson flowers. I had very little time to draw on our return. Sang in the evening.
