18 April 1874 — Málaga | |
Saturday. 18th April [1874]. We got up early in order to go with Major de Winton to the Larios gardens– Major de W. had already been to see the sugar manufacturing before breakfast & they brought us some fresh butter from the farm which was very nice for breakfast. I had rather a headache so I stayed at home with Nety & Henry went to the gardens– I worked at my water coloured sketch of the Convent with Nety’s help. At about 12 we went to the Consulate to call on Mrs Wilkinson who has been ill & then went on for a walk in the town but saw nothing picturesque & were rather mobbed by the boys. Lunched at 1½. At 2 we had a visit from the Civil Govr who was full of apologies for the way we had been treated by the men who carried up our luggage yesterday & who had the impertinence to make us pay 4 dollars. He said he has the men safe in prison. At 3 M. Larios took us in his carriage to the station. We had the engineer of the line’s saloon carriage which was the last of the train & it was very pleasant as the day was lovely & there was a platform outside where we could sit & see the country. We got to Bobadilla abt 6 & bought some provisions there. We retired into the saloon carriage—boiled our kettle—made tea & sat round the little table to our meal Major de Winton unpacking & arranging everything– It was dark by the time we had finished so we dosed & Nety & I talked. We got to Cordova abt 11½ had some biscuits & went to bed.. | |
