19 April 1874 — Cordova | |
Sunday. 19th [April 1874]. We were up early & went to the Cathedral with Mr Rutledge & took a turn to the Plaza Mayor & round the town & went to the Casino & had lemonade for it was very hot. We then returned to the hotel. Met there Condes de Rascon which a sick daughter she came down while we were at lunch looking fearfully ill—they are looking for some place to give her change of air—they have just brought her from Madrid. Major de Winton parted with us & went to Seville & we went to the ½ past 2 train & started for Madrid. Dinner at Mengibar & then I made some tea– Up the incline of Despeñaperros we went very slowly & we noticed some men get on the train—presently the door of our carriage was found to be open—the train stopped & the guard said “We have got them.” It turned out 2 men had attempted to rob a gentleman who was alone in a carriage & had opened our door but seeing we were 3 had not dared to attack them. The guardicos in the train caught the robbers & we went on to Madrid all right. | |
