6 May 1874 — Madrid
Wednesday. 6th May [1874]. We breakfasted a little earlier as I was going to the Presidencia to see Serrano arrive—but we found out that he was not expected till 12 so I did not go till ½ past 11 & even then we had a long time to wait. The Duchess de la Torre was in high spirits—there were a great many friends there to see him arrive. The day was cold & showery & we seemed to have a long time to wait. There were troops to keep the road & one or two seedy triumphal arches & an attempt at a trophy at the door of the Presidencia—at last when nearly 2 he was said to be arriving & he rode up in front of his staff. Arrived at his door he whirled round & saluted the staff & then rode in & dismounted & the Dss & children then left the balconies & went to meet him on the stairs. I followed them. He came up followed by the ADCs carrying bouquets & crowns which had been presented to him en route, & gave the Dss a kind of stage embrace each looking over their shoulders—kissed the children & shook hands all round & was at home again. The house soon began to fill with friends & Ministers & officers & I made my way out & went by the door in the Calle de Greda in the carriage home to lunch– Henry had gone into the Academia to see his entry. Clarita called in the afternoon. I did not go out again but painted, worked & played backgammon with Henry. After dinner we went to the Presidencia where there was a pretty large reception but we came home early.
