24 May 1874 — Madrid
Sunday. 24th [May 1874]. Went to church with Hill. When I got there Mr Jameson told me that his baby of 3 months was dead & the funeral being today his wife could not come to play & he asked me to play at the service which I did. We had no sermon– Had a very showery day & a thunderstorm wh made it quite cold– At 4½ went out with Henry to see the Exhibition of Modern pictures. It was the private view & there were all the world there, a band playing & refreshments– There were some very nice pictures there—especially some by Gonzalez & others by Francès. I went from here to the Whytes to make further explanations abt their journey & then went to meet Henry who had walked to the Fuente. Nicholas, Ruiz Gomez, Milan y Caro, Major Hall, A Weil & attachés dined with us– Mr Saurin was ill & did not come–
