6 June 1874 — Madrid
Saturday. 6th [June 1874]. There was a very heavy thunderstorm abt 4 in the morning– The messenger arrived from England. Wrote letters & worked. Esquivel came & altho’ it was still rather dark & thundery he corrected my drawing & I began to paint a little. I worked & read Henrys journal with acct of his journey in 39 & 40. At 5½ it cleared & we went out driving but it continued to rain more or less all the day. I left Henry to walk in the Recolletos & went to see Mariquilla. She proposed to go out with me—we fetched Henry & then drove down to Atocha and then left M. at her uncles & went home– Played backgammon in the eveng & afterwards I played piano & harmonium.
