15 June 1874 — Madrid
Monday. 15th [June 1874]. While I was dressing Coco took into his head to fly out of the window & pitched on the Convent roof. Hill flung down my brush & rushed out & got them to let her into the priests house & went into the Balcony & called in vain to Coco who was on the roof above her. The porter of the convent went on the roof & just as he reached him Coco flew off again & luckily this time alighted in the patch of ground opposite here. A dog was nearly finishing him but the woman to whom he belonged drew him off & Hill & Domingo rushed in & secured Coco. I painted all day till 5 only stopping to lunch. At 6 we went out driving & took a walk– A few people came in the evening—the Bernars, Mr Cushing, Hatzfeldt & there was only one whist table–
