6 July 1874 — Langham House, Portland Place
Monday. 6th [July 1874]. Were very busy all the morning over my dress for tonight’s ball. I had to make a lot of red satin bows for it. The dress is an old Spanish one of black Span. brocade with stomacher & petticoat of gold embroidered on white & on the black large red satin bows with centre of strass buttons—coral waist girdle– Head lace cap with satin rouleaus covered with jewels. Hair 2 plaits plaited with red satin hanging loose. While working Monty came & then Susan came to borrow some of my lace. After lunch I went off in a cab to see Evey Mahon & stayed with her a couple of hours—then I met Genl Hankey & also Lady Emily. Evy was very nice– Had tea with her & then she drove me home– My dress only begun at 2 on Saty was finished at dinner time & I went dressed in it to dine at Mrs Burrs– Met there Alice Rate—Mr Burton, the new National Galls man, & Sir Wm Boxall—Sir Samuel & Lady Baker, Ld & Lady Aberdare– In the evening a good many people came– At 11 Emilia Riaño in Spanish Goya costume, & Blanche as “rainbow” came to fetch me. Blanche’s was a lovely dress. A white tulle covered with different coloured tulles shaded as a rainbow– Iris’ in her hair & a veil with dew drops. We 3 went to the ball together– There were not many very remarkable costumes. Susan Hambro’s was the best as Marguerite de Valois. She had powdered her hair red with sandalwood & wore an immense Elisabethan ruff—a black satin gown bound with yellow satin & a yellow brocade tablier. Blanche went on to meet Adeline at another ball & after Emilia & I had supped I left her at home & went home & was in bed abt 3.
