20 July 1874 — Trent | |
Monday. 20th [July 1874]. Took a stroll in the town to the cathedral square wh is very picturesque. Left by 10.30 train. Between the stations of Mori & Ala our train came to a sudden stop & it was found that the axle of one of the wheels of the engine tender was broken. We got out & sat on the bank while a messenger was sent to Ala for help & we lost about an hour before an engine with 2 vans came & all the passengers & luggage were bundled into them. At Ala we were on the Italian frontier & we had our luggage examined & got some food. We got off in abt ½ hour and the train went as fast as possible but we were not after all in time to catch the Venice train which leaves Verona a little before 1. We had therefore to wait at Verona till 5.40. It was a very hot day. We took a carriage & drove to the Museum to have a look at the Descent from the Cross by Cavazzola and then went on to see the Pegrasses much to their surprise & delight. We went then back to the station where we had a very good dinner & went on by the slow train to Venice getting there at 9.30 we were met by our Giovanni and Fenite whose father Giacomo died last year—but who keeps on the Pension Suisse. We were glad of tea & to get to bed. | |
