25 July 1874 — Venice
Saturday. 25th [July 1874]. Went to Lido as usual but decided to go in our own gondola on acct of the crowd on the steamer & the rush & difficulty of getting a dressing room. Got there at the same time. Visit from an American monk Henry knew here—also Sr Frizzoli who lives in the hotel. Wrote letters & then went with Henry to call on Mr Brown & he gave us tea & we spent a long time with him. We returned for my painting lesson of an old man called Caldara & in the eveng we went to Mme Marcello’s where we met a great many men & Pss Papadopoli & Css Calbo.
