26 July 1874 — Venice | |
Sunday. 26th [July 1874]. It rained so we did not go to the Lido. Breakfasted at 9. At 11 we went to call on Css Miniscalchi a friend of Henry’s. I had rather a headache & laid down when we came in until 5 ocl: Cortellazzo arrived from Verona. At ½ past 5 Css Marcello came to fetch us in her gondola to see the Regatta. Her gondoliers were dressed in an old costume of blue & white satin– All the rich people’s gondoliers were in costume & the bisoni or boats used to keep the course were gaily dressed & the rowers in costumes of the same colour as the draperies of the boat. Css Marcello took us to the Municipio to see the coming in wh was a very pretty sight—the wharfs were covered with people & there was quantities of gondolas– When the regatta was over we went down the great canal to see the hangings of the houses & the people in the windows & returned to dine at 8. Cortellazzo dined with us. | |
