9 August 1874 — Venice
Sunday. 9th [August 1874]. Went to bathe at Lido & waited for the Vidoni party but they did not make their appearance so I bathed alone. The waves were rather high & one got rather banged abt. As we came home the wind changed & black clouds came up & before we got home the canal was covered with small waves. However we got in just before the rain began & we were very glad that we had given up the idea of going to the fleet this morning. At 3 we went out to call on Mr Rawdon Brown & found him in & then returned & I painted a little. I finished reading Forster’s life of Goldsmith. After dinner the weather became settled but it was rather cold & we were glad of warm shawls. We went for an hour’s row & then to pay Pss Vidoni a visit at 9 & took leave of Css Soranzo as they leave tomorrow.
