10 August 1874 — Venice
Monday. 10th August [1874]. Went to the Lido & bathed for the last time with the Vidoni party & went out with the Pss to the sandbank but the tide was high & strong & it was not so easy to get back. We rowed back by the side of their gondola & then took leave of them. We heard from Morelli that he is coming tomorrow. Wrote letters. At 4 we went to call on Mme Hurtado & found her at home & then went & bought a canvass & on to the Church of S. Gervasio & S. Protasio where we tied up the gondola & I made the outline of a drawing I am going to do there & we did not return till 6. It was rather a chilly eveng. Mr Brown called & sat some time with us. We dined in doors & went afterwards to Css Marcello’s where we met the poet Landrini, the Minister of Marne Signior Saint & several other people. The talk was chiefly of the fête at the fleet yesterday.
