16 August 1874 — Venice | |
Sunday. 16th [August 1874]. It rained in the morning so we could not go & bathe. Castellani came to say Mr Rate has arrived & is at the “Univers.” At 2 we went to fetch Idita & I took her in our gondola while Henry & Morelli went in the Salviati one & we went to the Armenian convent. It was abt an hour’s row. We were shown over the convent & then went on to the Lido & bathed. We came home, dressed & went to dine at Sir Wm Perry’s. He is a great invalid but seemed better & was supported into the drawing room in the evening. We stayed till 10 to hear a gentleman play a curious instrument he has invented—a violin of 4 violin power—being double, this is this gentleman’s pet invention. The strings being all metal the sound was harsh & loud & not pleasing. We went on to Css Marcello’s where we expected to meet Morelli but he did not make his appearance. We walked thro’ the Piazza in search of him but not finding him went home to bed. | |
