11 December 1874 — Madrid
Friday. 11th [December 1874]. News of a battle between Govt & Carlists in wh Genl Soma was wounded & a nephew of Serrano’s killed. We received 2 boxes full of Las Caldas [illegible word] as a present from Mendes Leals. I went out to see with Henry the tapestries exhibited in the Palace–there are wonderfully fine but we did not stay long on acct of the cold. Henry walked from there & when I had left some cards I went to meet him at the Recolletos. In the evening after playing backgammon we walked round to see the Bauers– Messenger by Canfranc arrived.
