12 December 1874 — Madrid
Saturday. 12th [December 1874]. I went out to see Emilia at the door of her house I met Mr Eykyn who said he was going off tonight by Canfranc. I found the Rianos in & they gave me some wine & bread & butter as I had eaten nothing today. I fetched Henry who was walking & took him home to write letters to send by Mr Eykyn. The Riaños dined with us & we went to the theatre. Bauer had sent us a box for the 1st performance of “Aida” for tonight so we took the Riaños. The theatre was full & the mise en scene of the piece splendid—the music as far as one cd judge by 1st hearing was pretty. The scene of the march was encored & much applauded. I find that the part suits Tamberlick even less well than his usual ones–
