28 December 1874 — Madrid
Monday. 28th [December 1874]. I painted in the morning. Ignacio was much worse– it was a dreadfully cold day & the wind was so high all the chimneys smoked. Brehm came. I did not go out. Count Maffei called with some letters to go in our packet of letters by French messenger. Henry drove out & left cards for me. A good many people came in the evening, the Ayltons, Seoanes—& a great many diplomats. The La Rochefoucaulds were to have left tonight but it appears that at dinner at the Perla it was suggested they shd stop & play bacara wh they did & sent for their luggage back from the station—much to the disgust of many people who went to see them off.
