16 January 1875 — Madrid
Saturday. 16th [January 1875]. Just after breakfast Koudriaffsky came to tell us abt the Opera. He was furious at the bad places wh had been given them in the Pit tier & said they of course never saw the King, that the foreign press were in the King’s private box & that there were a great many people out of uniform. It appears that the Capt. Genl never got their box till 11 at night & that the tickets given for the press were given away to other people or sold—& the whole thing was badly done. Esquivel gave me a painting lesson—& I painted till 3 when we went out riding. It was rather windy & just as we got to the Retiro the button of my elastic gave way & my hat was blown into the mud—I managed to put it on again & we were able to go on. Home at 5. Maffei came & Hatzfeldt both very unsatisfied with last night. Played backgammon in eveng.
