22 January 1875 — Madrid
Friday. 22nd [January 1875]. Painted all day. Copied a letter for Henry to send by an American messenger. I did not go out as I had rather a toothache. At 3 we went downstairs to hear the rehearsal of Mr Hunt’s octet wh was most successful. Mr Gosling & the Phipps were there & Mr P. came up to tea afterwards as did Mrs Hunt & Mirecki. Maffei also called & Bernadine Aylton & all had tea. In the evening we went to the Fernan Nuñez where there was dancing & a great many people. We stayed abt 1½ hour & came home early.
