23 February 1875 — Madrid | |
Tuesday. 23rd [February 1875]. Painted & had lesson. In the afternoon Mme Bauer came to ask me to go for a drive & I went with her to call on the Dss de la Torre whom we found at home & then we took a walk in the Recolletos but it was too cold to walk long. We went then to call on Mme d’Antas the new Portuguese Minister’s wife & they said she was in wh it appears she was not & we had to wait for her. We improved the moment by examining her painted furniture & her tapestry done by herself– We did not admire the painting wh was we thought washy & ill drawn– A picture worked by her was well done but we did care for the design wh was Chinese. In the eveng the Broutelles came to call for us & we went to the Bauers as I had promised to take them there. We had a very pleasant eveng & a good many people the Hunts Chaudordy &c came there. We walked home. | |
