Sunday. 7th [March 1875]. Stayed in all day there was an improvement in the weather. Wrote several letters. Henry went to the concert. Pss of Asturias widows of Ct Girgenti arrived in Madrid today. In the afternoon I got a note from Dss de la T. to say Serrano was coming back this eveng & asking if she shd come & dine next Sunday instead. I sent the note to Hy at the concert & asked him to settle with her. Sagasta came & called & I kept him till Henry returned wh he did soon after 5. Bernadine came to ask me to take them to Montijos tonight. The Dss de la Torre, Emilia & Mr Gay: D. Miguel do los Santos Alvarez, Genl Beaumont & Legation dined with us. The messenger Capt Drury & Hunts came after dinner. The Dss went away early. At 11 we went to Montijo’s & took the Ayltons. There were very few people there & the Css sat in an inner room as she had a bad cold—the atmosphere of the house was stifling. | |
