30 June 1875 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 30th June [1875]. The Admiral invited us to go & see the Fleet & we went to the Italian Adl’s aviso & he took us with Sir J. Drummond, his wife the Marques de Carreto, Pss Maria Dolgorouky, the Prefet, Squadeo & all the high authorities. Lady D was ill & cd not go so the Adl asked me to take her place. It took abt 1½ hour to get to sea, we first went to board the Devastation & went all over her– They put us into the tower in wh are the 2 big guns & hurried us round tower & all. The Captn (Richards) showed us all over, & we climbed up & down– We saw the officers cabin wh are all under water, lighted with lamps & has air pumped down. Capt R. had a wonderful little green paraqueet wh said any & every thing. After seeing the Devastation we went on board the Hercules where we had a splendid lunch. I sat between Adl del Carreto & the Genl in command at Venice. The Adl’s Cabin is done up like a drawing room & has a verandah outside where we sat & when they smoked, the 2 ladies joining also in a cigarette. After seeing over the Hercules we returned to Venice getting back to dinner. As we were sitting on our terrace after dinner we saw Css Marcello & her children arriving from the station.
