1 July 1875 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 1st July [1875]. Went to Lido to bathe. Went at 1 to call on Css Marcello to see if we cd arrange abt going to see the Fleet on Saturday but found it cd not be managed. Then went to see Sir Moses Montefiore who is passing here on his way to Jerusalem. He is 93 & tall & well. He is a big tall man—wears a skull cap—a shirt with deep ruffles & a white neckcloth many times round his neck. He is perfectly clear in his head & active on his feet. He intends only staying 15 days at Jerusalem & then returns. He expressed a wish to see Salviati’s so Henry met him there at 5 when the old gentleman insisted on ordering Henry & my portrait in mosaic. In the afternoon Sir James D. called—also the Malcolms & Ct & Css Mocenigo– Painted view from terrace. After dinner Brown looked in.
