14 July 1875 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 14th [July 1875]. Went to Favorita sea not so rough as yesterday. Came back breakfasted, dressed & started for our rendezvous at Ponte de la Paglia. Found abt 30 people assembled to whom Css Marcello introduced us amongst them Ct & Css Carlo Borromeo, Ct & Css Sormani, Pss Dolgorouky, P. Pagarino, Marquis de la Romana & son. Ct Mocenigo de S. Stae & his boy, Ct & Css Sacchi, Sign Bianchi, Ct Dante Alleghieri & brother, Css Dow Papadopoli. Ct Angelo P. M & Mme Blaas. Ct Michieli & daughter, M & Mrs Nevile &c &c Lieut Bourke came with the steamer pinnace & 3 boats to be towed but we settled ourselves in 2 of them. We got to the Alberone where the Invincible is in 1¼ hour. Capt Solly received us Capt Iago not being there. They showed us over the ship & then gave us refreshments in the ward room. The Capts abode having been lately painted could not be used. The band played & the dancing began. When the ladies were tired there was an interlude. The ship’s fiddler came up & 2 men danced the hornpipe wh was loudly applauded by the Italians. Another man then danced the second dance. Afterwards the gentry danced again & at 6½ we started for Venice. We all went in one boat as it was found it wd hold us all & we shd thus go quicker. The son of Ct Mocenigo a middy who had gone with us, as also Gino Marcello, had some sherry given him on board the Invincible & he was very ill all the way back. Ct Angelo Papadopoli was also a good deal the worse but he luckily slept most of the time. We invited one of our middy’s Apples (Mr Coker) to come to Venice & dine with us wh he got permission to do. We dined at 8 I did not go out Henry & Apples went out together.
