27 July 1875 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 27th [July 1875]. Went out before breakfast to paint the well at Guggenheims—came back to lunch at 12. Castelazzo arrived from Vicenza & went with us. We bought at Guggenheims a large old iron candelabra to hang in the middle of our gallery. I went to paint at Court yard. Went to the Opera at 9 to the box of Malcolms. The 1st singer was Albani who is a Canadian, young, nice looking & a very fresh voice & well taught. She was much applauded. We heard the Sonnambula. The tenor did not sing well but the bass Bagaggioli was excellent. The theatre is very pretty the decoration very handsome—the royal box lighted up—audience most attentive– If people talk in the boxes they are immediately hushed. There are no gallery only boxes & stalls– & spit where men stand & where they pay 4 francs! We got home abt 12.
