21 August 1875 — Bere Cottage, Bere Regis, Dorset
Saturday. 21st August [1875]. I sat in the garden & began a sketch of Monty’s cottage. Adeline sat with me– Monty went to Weymouth & Henry went fishing. Monty has 2 Manx cats who have no tails only small stumps of tails. One was nearly killed by the cook. She was cooking some fat wh caught fire & in her flurry she ran & threw it into the dust hole where the unfortunate cat was lying asleep. The poor thing is dreadfully hurt. After lunch Adeline & I took a walk in the leases & we discovered a man had a fine green parrot in the village. We returned to tea & then had another stroll. Monty did not return till after dinner.
