2 September 1875 — Shipton Grange, nr. Tunbridge, Kent
Thursday. 2nd September [1875]. We took a walk in the morning that is Mr T. Hankey, Mr Jekyll, Miss Hervey & selves & went to see a curious house called “the Moat.” It is surrounded by a deep moat full of water & is most curious there is a bridge over it to the front door & the court inside is most picturesque & bright with flowers. The house was evidently added to in the time of James. There is an old stables outside opposite the front door. It belongs to the Selby’s who are very poor & are obliged to let it every year for 6 weeks. We walked thro’ the hop gardens going there & the picking had just begun. Mr Hankey took me in to see it & then gave the men a shilling “to clean the ladies shoes” wh is the “hopping” phrase for getting a glass of beer. After lunch we drove with Mrs Hankey over to Mr Kerkman Hodgeson’s place & were recd by his daughter & his son who has just married Lord Cork’s daughter & they have just returned from the honeymoon. We saw the collections of modern pictures wh are very interesting. There are Turners, Stansfields &c &c. In the eveng I sang & there was whist.
