25 November 1875 — Madrid
Thursday. 25th [November 1875]. Painted all the morng. Sr Monteverde called to say he had sent us the grey horses to see. At 3 we went out driving to try the new horses. They are Spanish horses– We are to give 10,000 reals (100 guineas) & the owner will also take our old horses in exchange one of whom is quite gone in the legs. We walked in the Fuente & went to the Walshams. Mr & Mrs Phipps came there. Mrs P. is looking very thin & yellow after her confinement. We came home early. Mr Cresswell came to tea. Ida Bauer called & then Bernadine & M. Aylton– Mrs Campbell Scarlett tried to teach me to net & I tried to puzzle it out when I got home– With the help of the work woman I managed it. We got invitations to dine at the Palace on Sunday wh is the King’s 18th birthday. Henry will go but afraid for me as he will not let me go as we have to get out of our carriages in the open air without carpet or shelter & I have still a bad cold. Only the Nuncio & Ambassadors are allowed to drive in to the foot of the grand staircase. Things are very badly managed here. It appears that Mme Koudriaffsky who since she recd the order of Maria Louisa sees everything colour de rose went to see the Infanta on her (Mme K’s) return to Madrid. There was no one to show her the way & she found the Infanta’s appartments with difficulty. Coming out she lost her way. A servant met her & asked her roughly Que quieri [illegible word]? Bajar said Mme K who knows very little Spanish at wh the man pointed to a small staircase & she descended it. It was dark & Mme K fell—broke her eyeglasses & bracelet & hurt herself & found herself at the bottom of the stairs but nowhere near her carriage & it took her some time to find it. She was frantic, but the “banda” still covers her mouth & she did not wish to mention the contretemps but somehow the secret oozed out. In the eveng Henry went to the Salms party.
