26 November 1875 — Madrid
Friday. 26th November [1875]. Painted all the morng. One of the grey horses was pronounced by the vet as [illegible word] so we gave up the idea of buying them. At 2 Henry & I went out walking & went to Mme Montijo’s hoping to see her but she was engaged with a “punta de Beneficencia.” Walked on to the Riaños & made Emilia come out with us. Took a turn in the Recolletos & then came home. Emilia went home at 5.30. After dinner we went [to] the Bauers & found very few people there only M. Pollack, D. Venancio Gonzalez & Esquivel. There was a good deal of talk abt the banishment of 3 ex deputies their only offence being that they had put on their hats in the entracte at the Opera in the King’s presence. Henry suggested that it was a scene of Gessler & William Tell & D. Venancio said he wd get an article written on the subject in the “Imperical” the paper in wh he writes.
