27 November 1875 — Madrid
Saturday. 27th November [1875]. I painted all the morng & had a lesson of Esquivel. Hear that Mrs Phipps is ill & has caught cold & has been within an ace of pulmonia. Went at 2 with Henry to Mme Montijo’s & at last saw her. She was very kind and affectionate– She declared all the Madrid ladies were fond of me—wh I was obliged gently to contradict. She said she heard Prince Arthur was at Gib: and if he came here she would give a ball in his honour. Henry went to the F.O. & I went shopping with Emilia & then to Lady Walshams & took Emilia with me. Met there besides the Scarletts, Mr & Miss Owens & Messrs Hunt & Kennedy, left Emilia at her house & came on home.
