28 November 1875 — Madrid
Sunday. 28th [November 1875]. Made cigarettes for Henry. He went to the “besa manos” at ¼ to 1 & returned at 2.30. It appears the gossip is that P. Arthur wants to come here from Gib & that Henry prevents his coming. D’Antas tried to make it up between Silva Alegre & Henry as the Alfonsists are ready now to do anything to be civil in order to get P. Arthur here—D’Antas said as much & it was so flagrant that Henry wd not receive Silva Alegre’s excuses in such a way. As soon as Henry returned from the Palace he took me out walking. After the men had been recd by the King came the ladies turn & we were invited to go to the Palace at 3. I excused myself as I had for the dinner– We walked to the Serranos & saw both the D. & Dss & the Dss brought me home in her carriage as it began to rain & was very cold. At 5 a visit from Mme Chacon & her daughter & her sister Caroline Bassecourt– Henry went to dine at the Palace at a grand dinner given in the domed hall, called the salon de las columnas– He says the grand staircase was lined with servants, grooms & jockeys, coachmen &c wh had a most grotesque effect. The Riaños & Mr Kennedy dined with me & we spent the eveng making cigarettes. Henry returned abt ½ past 11.
