19 March 1876 — Madrid | |
Sunday. 19th [March 1876]. Church in morng. In afternoon visit from Mr Birch & his son who have just arrived. At 3 Nelly & I drove to fetch Emilia & we went to the Camp. It was horridly cold & dusty & a high wind blew. The King & the army of 25,000 men are encamped outside the town in the direction of the [illegible word] & the thing is to go & drive there. When we got to the edge of the Camp we lost courage & drove home to get some hot tea. The scene was pretty of all the white tents with the background of blue mountains like a bit of a Velasquez background—but it was too cold to tempt us to stay. Genl Pavia, the Hatzfeldts, Contenson, Mr Gayangos, Phipps dined with us. I dressed up Nelly in a white mantilla for dinner. After dinner she left us & returned to her own home to our great regret. | |
