20 March 1876 — Madrid | |
Monday. 20th [March 1876]. Henry went at 9.30 to the Presidencia to see the King make his triumphal entry. I waited at home & saw him from our own Windows as he came up past the Ministerio de Marina & went along the Encarnacion. Abt 10.30 he appeared & the ladies of the Cruz Roja who were in the windows of the Admiralty cheered & threw crowns as did the Senators & Deputies who had a place at the Corner built for them. The King was not very easy to distinguish as he rode just ahead of his numerous staff. The crowd did not cheer. As soon as I had seen him from our windows I drove to the Hotel de la Paix & went to Lady Walsham’s windows to see him pass thro’ the Puerta del Sol where there was no enthusiasm at all. Found the Bauers there & went also to see Mrs Birch who is also at that Hotel. Henry fetched me & we walked home by 12 & breakfasted. The troops had not all passed our windows till ¼ to 3. Went out for a walk with Henry. At 3 recd a letter from Mme Novaliches to say that there was a besamanos tomorrow at 5 P.M. & the ladies of the Corps Dip: were to attend. I have no train made & the shops are all shut. We went to consult Mme Hatzfeldt who had no train ready. She said she was going to force open a shop & get some silk & promised to send me some. At 7 I arranged with Hill that she shd try. After dinner I went to the Bauers & asked Ida to allow her maid to go and help Hill. She sent her at once & when we returned home they were at work but it looked hopeless as the low body had also to be made. | |
