21 March 1876 — Madrid | |
Tuesday. 21st [March 1876]. Hill had worked night & Mme Bauers maid & 2 work women came to help & the train & body were finished by 12. Emilia Riaño came to help me to dress. I sent round to ask Mme Hatzfeldt at what hour she understood the Ct was. She said the thought 1.30 but Mme Greindl said 5 & had I not better send to ask. I wrote at once to the Pss lady in waiting Marquesa Calderon de la Barca—& she said she wd send me an answer in an hour– To make sure of being ready I went on dressing when after 1 came a note from Mme Calderon saying we were to go at 5. So I undressed & sent word to the other ladies but was only in time to stop Mme Hatzfeldt. It was a miserably cold day & I was shaking with cold all day. Clarita called also Genl Milans del Bosch who came to return us the letter Henry had written to Mme Retazzi thinking it was better to take it away from her lest she shd publish it. Then came Mr kennedy with a message from Henry who had gone to the besamanos at 1.30 that it was all right for 5 so I was to fetch Mme Hatzfeldt. This I did– Henry was home before I started. Ida came to see me dressed. We found Silva Alegre in a great state abt the confusion of hours as also the Marquesa Novaliches. We waited a few minutes for Mme d’Antas & then went into a room where were the King & Pss & Mme Sta Cruz who held the Pss’ train. The Pss apologized to me & said that as it was so near 1 when she was asked by Mme Calderon she had thought it more civil to us to say she expected us at 5 so giving us more time to dress. We were with the K. & Pss abt 5 minutes & then rushed home again. Mme d’Antas was in white satin with pink velvet bows & an amber satin train! lent by Css Montijo. Mme Hatzfeldt was in white silk as also I was but my dress & train were trimmed with old point d’Alençon Capt Rol. | |
