8 April 1876 — Madrid
Saturday. 8th [April 1876]. Got up early to paint expecting Esquivel who however did not come. At 1.30 I went out with Ida B & A Weil to the opening of the Modern Picture Gallery for the year– The King & Pss were there. The pictures were abominable & painful. We went afterwards to rest at Lady Walshams whose “hotel” is opposite & then at 5 to Ct Ludolf to a garden party. We were much exhausted & in great want of tea wh we got at once. Then sat in the garden watching the “tir au pistolet” with air guns, at targets set against the front wall—& most dangerous entertainment as the garden is abt 20 feet long & all the neighbours were at their upper windows watching us. However no accident happened & it was warm & mild for sitting out. I got home abt 6. Henry not well eno’ to go out. The Messenger arrived from England. Today finished the border of one large repostero.
