18 June 1876 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 18th [June 1876]. Went to church with Mrs Burr & Edward but came away before the sermon. Breakfast at 12.30. Afterwards measured our red silk & found we had in all 220 yards. At 4 went out. Henry took Blanche & Edward & I went with Mrs Burr. We went for a row round the Giudecca & came out below the station & came into the Canareggio to see the procession. After rowing about some time admiring the women some of whom were very handsome & had their hair very quaintly done, the procession appeared– It consisted in men in white carrying huge crosses & gigantic candles—a band—boys with small ones—& then the Host carried under a canopy & then more candles. Every now & they they stopped & sang a lovely hymn—once when the Host got in the center of the bridge the procession stopped– The hymn was sung—a bell was rung & the priest elevated the host. It was a most picturesque sight. As the priest turned in a different direction & elevated the Host the bell was rung & everyone went on their knees. We returned to dinner at 7. Took a short row in eveng & then stopped under giardinetto to hear music.
