21 June 1876 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 21st [June 1876]. Went by 3.30 train to Vicenza. Cortelazzo met us. We went to Hotel de Roma where we breakfasted. It is a new hotel—the old one being shut up. After breakfast went to a wood carver called Zanetti where we helped B & Edward to choose furniture for their house in London & then to a shop where church stuffs & brocades for walls are made. Then on to another carver where Edward bought 2 little tables & then back to the hotel to rest. Blanche unluckily sat on a chair wh collapsed under her but said she was not hurt. We had some coffee. A storm came up. We went to see Cortelazzo’s house & visit his wife. All over the house are Henry’s photo with this inscription under them “Su c’a un Des Layard e il mio.” Poor Cortelazzo is quite cracked. He showed us a beautiful helmet he had made for Count Papadopoli in imitation of the antique. We left Vicenza by 6.5 train to return to Venice & left E & Blanche to go on by a later train to Verona where they will sleep tonight on their road back to England. We got home at 8. Dinner & bed.
