1 July 1876 — Ca’ Capello, Venice | |
Saturday. 1st July [1876]. My 32 birthday. Went with Hill to Lido to bathe. In afternoon went to paint in S. Mark’s till Henry fetched me at 5. When I went in I found a very picturesque little procession going on—moving a Virgin from a side to the great altar. There was chanting & nice music from the organ. After dinner we took a row & went to Piazza & had ices. The band was playing. | |
