15 July 1876 — Ca’ Capello, Venice | |
Saturday. 15th [July 1876]. Went to Lido to bathe with Hill. Telegram from Maffei saying he was coming this eveng. Malcolm called—having returned from a journey in the hills. At 2 I went out to paint at S. Trovaso. Gonzalvo came at 11 to give me a lesson in perspective & then breakfasted with us– When I returned from S. Trovaso I painted at home at chapel till 7 when Css Marcello & Abbate Zanetti came. Henry went to station to meet Maffei & as soon as they came we all 5 dined. After dinner we took Maffei out & went to the Giudecca to see the Redemption fête & then to the Piazza where we had ices– Did not get home till 11 as we stopped to see the gondolas & boats decorated with branches & lanterns going towards the Lido full of people supping & who were going to “see in” the fête. | |
