25 July 1876 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 25th July [1876]. Signor Costa an Italian artist came to see our pictures. At 1 Prof. Zanella came & brought with him a lady & 3 daughters & Signor Maffei the poet. They looked at the pictures &c & stayed some time. There were heavy showers of rain all the morning. In the afternoon Henry took me to Signor Costas to see the sketches which were very pretty & Henry said reminded him of old Cromé. We went on to the Edens & they were out. While I was waiting for Henry at Salviati’s door the Edens passed & asked us to go in & see a sketch of Costas for wh they had given £36. Countess Marcello dined with us & after I dressed in white mantilla to go & spend the evening at the Lido where there was to be come kind of fête given by the naval officers. Ct & Css Brandolini with Ct & Css Dadda & Minghetti called after dinner to tell us they were starting & we with water proofs & umbrellas followed in our gondola– When we got to the Piazzetta the Brandolinis called out to us to wait as the Daddas were afraid of the wind & wished to land. We started once more when Henry called out to Minghetti that he promised him a cold bath in a few minutes as we were going to have a storm– At this we all made up our minds not to go to the Lido so we all went to sit in the Piazza. We sat there till ½ past 10– A great storm came up before then & we went to the gondola thro’ buckets of rain & got home as quick as we could. Cortellazzo came from Vicenza to stay with us.
