24 August 1876 — Aldermaston Court, Aldermaston, Berkshire
Thursday. 24th [August 1876]. Mrs Burr, Mrs Rolls & I went to Padworth to call on Mrs Derby Griffiths before lunch. We found her resplendent in blue satin with a network over garment—“tucked up” for puttering in the garden & with all kinds of knobby jewellery. She took us out in the garden. After lunch I sketched till 5 when Henry fetched me home to tea & then I went to the lake & the Squire took me across in the punt to the fishing house. Caught nothing but gudgeon. The Riaños & their boy Juanito came down by 5 train & had a hand at fishing but with no result. I had brought a lot of wasps grubs for the Squire from Eastnor but to no purpose the Schlei would not be caught. A neighbourly dinner party– The Paul Humbers who brought a rising young portrait painter Mr Uless &c &c
